Scotland seems a nice place to live

All in all this article about plans to provide free eye tests in Scotland got me thinking. Why is it that in Scotland they do things so much better?

Tuition fees were abolished in Scotland.

Free personal care was introduced for the elderly.

The system for buying and selling houses is so much simpler.

Now they are introducing free eye tests and have a plan to introduce free dental checks next year.

Yes I know the answer about devolved power and the Lib Dems being part of the administration and the sort of policies we have been pushing but I guess I just wish we could get some common sense into English politics and start delivering some improvements in the quality of life for people down south.

If it wasn't for the fact that my family and employment are all in the south I would seriously think about moving to Scotland where quality of life seems to be a real political issue.

We have followed similar thought processes in the past.

It would be unfair to move my mother at this stage of her life - even though it would be to the country of her birth.

Add that to tuition fees as well it would make a considerable financial difference to us as a family.

There are equally beautiful and remote places in Scotland where we could live - maybe a retirement option - although I was kind of hoping for somewhere warm.

One word answer. Subsidies.

Scotland is a nice place to live - far nicer than England anyhow (and increasingly far more open-minded about the world at large).

Mind you, we could have been far richer, given the access to our own oil resources. I'll never understand why the Scots in the 70's and 80's were prepared to subordinate their own prosperity and future in favour of a union where the oil subsidy bounty went from Scotland to England.
