Correction - Thai stand off may not be over

A couple of days ago it looked as if the problems were over and peace was starting to break out. The Prime Minister had agreed to stand down and the opposition parties had agreed to stop the protests.

The Prime Minister has temporarily handed over to the Deputy Prime Minister but he in turn will not be able to become Prime Minister as he is not a member of parliament.

Thaksin Shinawatra also remains leader of his party Thai Rak Thai and the opposition parties are clearly concerned that he will remain in power and in control even if he is not the titular Prime Minister.

If and when all 500 seats are filled then parliament will need to choose a new Prime Minister but this looks under threat as it now looks as if the by-elections will also be boycotted by the opposition.

Given that Thai Rak Thai won 57% of the vote the democratic process in Thailand is starting to look very shaky
