One place the star wars system cannot be based

This is Greenham Common that well known former military airbase and probably the most famous site for the US Cruise Missiles and the protests that were associated with them.
According to the Guardian today the US is revamping and relaunching its Star Wars program designed to create a missile shield around the US (and possibly) its allies. Mr Blair in his wisdom is begging Mr Bush to allow the UK to be part of this scheme and to be allowed to station some of the missiles here. According to the Guardian "such a scheme would be controversial and raise the spectre of a return to Greenham Common-style mass peace protest."
Almost certainly but not at Greenham Common Mr Blair.
The runway has gone, the military hardware has gone, the fuel tanks are out, the fencing is down and the public are back where they belong - on the Common. The Common is slowly being restored to its former state with grazing cattle and public access. There is no airbase left for you to station your missiles on.
The picture above was taken on one of the work parties carried out by the Greenham and Crookham Common Conservation Volunteers a local group who are doing a huge amount of work to help with the restoration of the common.

I think all the groups involved have done a marvellous job in reclaiming Greenham Common. Long may they continue to do so.
